About Oxprenolol
Nonselective ? adrenergic blocker with partial beta agonist, Antihypertensive, antiangina.
Mechanism of Action of Oxprenolol
Oxprenolol is a non selective beta receptor antagonist with partial beta agonistic action. It reduces exercise induced increase in heart rate and cardiac output & decreases oxygen consumption; cardiac work and aortic pressure. It posses negative inotropic effect to a lesser extend. It has membrane stabilizing effect. It decreases nor adrenaline and renin releases. It decreases central sympathetic out flow. The drug decreases peripheral resistance & BP in hypertensive individuals. Suppress arrhythmogenic sympathetic influence of catecholamine and decreases cardiac impulse formation in sinus node with resultant slowing of sinus rate. It prolongs sino-atrial conduction time. Both AV conduction time and AV node refractory period are lengthened. It increases oxygen supply and exercise tolerance in angina patients.
