Mechanism of Action of Formoterol Inhalers
This ?2 agonist acts locally in the lung as a bronchodilator. It stimulates adenyl cyclase leading to the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) via adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Increased levels of cAMP result in relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle.

Absorption- Rapidly absorbed after oral inhalation
Distribution- Widely distributed in the lungs. 61%-64% bound to the plasma proteins
Metabolism- Metabolized primarily by direct glucoronidation at either the phenolic or aliphatic hydroxyl group and O-demethylation followed by glucoronide conjugation at phenolic hydroxyl groups. Minor pathways involve sulfate conjugation of formoterol and deformylation followed by sulfate conjugation
Excretion- Excreted through urine and feces
