Mechanism of Action of Phenolphthalein

Phenolphthalein is a stimulant laxative. It acts directly on the colonic mucosa-where it stimulates sensory nerve endings in the walls of the intestine and the rectum to produce parasympathetic reflexes resulting in increased peristaltic contractions of the colon and cause defecation.
Nitric oxide (NO) is produced in the intestine, where it stimulates electrolyte secretion and relaxes smooth muscle
