About Carbimazole
Thyroid peroxidase inhibitors(thioamide),Sulfur-containing imidazole derivatives, Antithyroid.
Mechanism of Action of Carbimazole
It is a potent antithyroid drug which inhibits thyroid hormone synthesis. It binds to thyroid peroxidase and inhibits oxidation of iodide or iodotyrosil residues. It inhibits iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and prevents coupling of iodothyrosine residues to form T3 and T4. Thyroid colloid depleted over time and blood levels of T3 &T4 are reduced

Absorption: Well absorbed orally, Distribution: Widely distributed in the body, It crosses the placental barrier and also enters in to the breast milk, Metabolism: Metabolized in to active Methimazole, Excretion: Excreted through urine primarily as metabolites.

1. Nausea

Contra-indications of Carbimazole
1. Hypersensitivity to the antithyroid drugs
2. Obstruction in the trachea.

1. Hyperthyroidism due to Grave`s disease
2. Prior to thyroidectomy
Interactions for Carbimazole
Warfarin: Increased sensitivity to warfarin in hyperthyroid state. Dose adjustment required when patient rendered euthyroid.
Typical Dosage for Carbimazole
Adults : Initial dose : 15-45mg daily in div. doses depending upon severity. Maint: 2.5-25mg daily for 12 mths.
Thyroidectomy : 15-45 mg daily in divided doses for 2-4 wks.
