Mechanism of Action of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)
The drug exerts it`s action through luteinizing hormone receptor and promotes maintenance of corpus luteum and sustains luteal function. Thus it causes secretion of progesterone. Progesterone enriches the uterus with thick lining of blood vessels and capillaries so that it can sustain the growth of fetus. It also protect fetus from immune system of mother during first trimester of pregnancy. Being structurally similar to luteinizing hormone it induces ovulation in the ovaries and testosterone production in the testes.
