Mechanism of Action of Valethamate
Valethamate is an anticholinergic drug used as smooth muscle relaxant. It has both central and peripheral action. It is a competitive inhibitor of Acetylcholine. Valethamate blocks the muscarinic receptors and inhibits the action of Acetylcholine and produces muscle relaxations.

Absorption: Valethamate is well absorbed after parenteral administration.
Distribution: It is widely distributed in the body .It crosses the placenta and excreted in breast milk.
Metabolism: It is metabolised in the liver.
Excretion: Drug and its metabolites are excreted mainly in the urine.

Indications for Valethamate
1. Cervical dilatation in the first stage of labour.
2. Symptomatic relief of gastrointestinal colic, Biliary colic, Ureteric colic
Interactions for Valethamate
Other antispsmodics, Some antihistamines, Phenothiazines, Disopyramide, Quinidine: Potentiate the effect of Valethamate,It delays gastric emptying and reduces absorption of other drugs
Typical Dosage for Valethamate
Adult:
Oral: 10 - 20 mg 8 - 12 hours in a day.
Parenteral (IM or IV): 4 - 8 mg
Children: Not recommended

Store at room temperature. Protect from light. Keep out of the reach of children
Effects of Missed Dosage of Valethamate
Take the missed dose as soon as noticed and if it is the time for next dose then skip the missed dose. Continue the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Effects of Overdose of Valethamate
Give supportive measures and symptomatic treatment. To overcome the anticholinergic effect of Valethamate, Physostigmine 1 - 3mg IM or SC can be given repeat the dose if needed.
