Mechanism of Action of Methylphenidate
Methylphenidate activates the brain stem arousal system and cortex. blocking the reuptake of dopamine into nerve terminals (as well as stimulating the release of dopamine from dopamine nerve terminals) resulting in increased dopamine levels in the synapse.

Interactions for Methylphenidate
1) adrenergic agonist drugs or pemoline with methylphenidate increases the risk of liver toxicity
2) Drugs that elevate BP including MAOIs, coumarin, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, DOPA, antipsychotics, phenylbutazone. Alcohol.
Typical Dosage for Methylphenidate
1) For narcolepsy in adults: 5?20 mg two to three times a day, 30?45 minutes before meals.
2) For ADHD in children: The initial recommended dosage is 5 mg twice daily before breakfast and lunch, increased by 5?10 mg per week to a maximum of 60 mg per day.
