About Benzonatate
Benzonatate is a butylamine, chemically related to other ester local anesthetics such as procaine and tetracaine.Non-narcotic antitussive.
Mechanism of Action of Benzonatate
Benzonatate is thought to act as a local anesthetic, decreasing the sensitivity of stretch receptors in the lower airway and lung, thereby reducing the drive to cough after taking a deep breath.

Metabolism :Benzonatate is hydrolyzed to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) by plasma esterases.

Special Precautions while taking Benzonatate
1.Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is a metabolite of the ester class of local anesthetics, which includes benzonatate, as well as procaine and tetracaine. Severe allergic reactions have been reported in patients who are allergic to PABA. Severe sensitivity reactions to benzonatate have resulted in respiratory side effects such as bronchospasm, laryngospasm and cardiac arrest.
2.This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.
3.Excessive absorption of benzonatate (a local anesthetic) in the oral mucosa will result in the rapid development of numbness of the mouth and throat. In extreme cases, the mouth and pharynx may become so numb that pulmonary aspiration may occur.So swllow it with water an do not chew.
4.It should never be used to suppress a productive cough or in place of treatment of the actual cause of cough, such as asthma treatment.
5.Limit alcoholic beverages.

Treatment
1.Evacuate gastric contents and administer copious amounts of activated charcoal slurry. Even in the conscious patient, cough and gag reflexes may be so depressed as to necessitate special attention to protection against aspiration of gastric contents and orally administered materials. Convulsions should be treated with a short-acting barbiturate given intravenously and carefully titrated for the smallest effective dosage. Intensive support of respiration and cardiovascular- renal function is an essential feature of the treatment of severe intoxication from overdose.
2.Do not use CNS stimulants.
