Cefdinir

About Cefdinir
Semisynthetic (Third Generation ) cephalosporin antibiotic, Oral broad-spectrum antibiotic.
Mechanism of Action of Cefdinir
Cefdinir is a 3rd generation cephalosporin which exerts its bactericidal action against both gram positive & aerobic gram negative organisms by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cefdinir inhibits transpeptidase & thus prevents cross linking of bacterial cell wall. Transpeptidase & associated proteins constitute various types of specific binding proteins which have affinity for cephalosporins like Cefdinir
Pharmacokinets of Cefdinir
Absorption: Partially absorbed after oral administration, Distribution: Volume of distribution is greater for children than adults. Metabolism: The drug is not significantly metabolized inside the body. Excretion: Excreted mainly through urine

Antacids: Cefdinir rate and extent of absorption is reduced in presence of antacid.
Probenecid: It inhibits renal excretion of cefdinir and may prolong plasma levels by competitively inhibiting renal tubular secretion.
Iron: Concomitant administration of cefdinir with therapeutic iron supplement reduces absorption.
Loop diuretics: Risk of nephrotoxicity may be increased.
