Sodium stibogluconate is a pentavalent antimonial which is the drug of choice for kala-azar. The exact mechanism of action and selective toxicity to the parasite is unclear. The drug inhibits the SH group containing enzymes of parasite & affects the bioenergetics of the parasite. It blocks the glycolytic & fatty acid oxidation pathways

10 to 20mg/kg/day I.M. or I.V. (infusion over 5 minutes) for 20 to 30 days
Maximum dose: 850mg/day
