Zonisamide

About Zonisamide
A sulfonamide derivative, Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, Anticonvulsant.
Mechanism of Action of Zonisamide
Zonisamide is a sulfonamide anticonvulsant used for the treatment of partial onset seizures. Zonisamide produces its actions by following mechanisms.
1. It inhibits the repetitive firing of voltage gated sodium channel
2. Zonisamide reduces the voltage dependent transient inward T type calcium (Ca2+) current.
3. It has weak carbonic anhydrase enzyme inhibitory activity. By inhibiting carbonic anhydrase in the brain it increases the carbon dioxide levels in brain which leads to increased acidity and raising seizure threshold.
