Mechanism of Action of Terebenthine

Oil of Turpentine (Terebenthine) is a volatile oil used medicinally. It acts as a rubefacient and counterirritant and also exhibits antiseptic properties. Turpentine arrest profuse secretion and relieves congestion of bronchioles. When absorbed in to the blood it produces leucocytosis. It is excreted through lungs, skin, and kidneys. During excretion by the bronchioles they act as expectorants and expels mucous.
