Polystrene sulphonate resin

About Polystrene sulphonate resin
Insoluble cation exchange resins, Potassium binder , Potassium removal Agents( In Hyperkalemia).
Mechanism of Action of Polystrene sulphonate resin
These are insoluble cation exchange resins used for potassium removal. The resin acts by cumulative process throughout the gastrointestinal tract, removing potassium ions which are carried away in the feces. As the resin passes through the large intestine and colon, it comes into contact with fluids containing increasing amounts of potassium. Potassium is taken up in increasing amounts in exchange for calcium or sodium ions. As the length of time the resin remains in the body increases the effectiveness of resin.
